Scientific name: Calosoma scrutator
Common name: Fiery Searcher Beetle
These are very beneficial insects so don't kill them.
They are wicked fast on those long legs, and I took dozens of pictures of this guy as he scrambled around in a steel bowl until I finally got a few in focus. Then we later released him into the garden to do his stuff. Originally, he was rescued from drowning in a rain barrel out at Fermilab. He'd fallen in and couldn't get out. So after a few pictures, he got his freedom back.
